That's Life
”That’s Life” by Sylvia Walker was directed for Ratae in February 2007 by Malcolm
Wardle.
Set in a residential home for the elderly the scene was set for several clashes of
egos and personalities. Most of the cast needed to look the part without the use
of make-up. Malcolm initially felt that the play would be an ideal vehicle to celebrate
the longevity of four of the company’s most mature members, namely Celia Leader,
Doreen
Pollock, Arthur Potterton and Jim Salmon. Unfortunately Celia and Arthur could not
fulfil their roles so two younger actors took their place. Paddy McNair made her
acting debut after stage-managing so many productions over the years. Rehearsals
got underway and a great of fun was had by all.
The production was entered for the full-length play festival and was awarded overall
second place, with Anne Crocker and Tony Baxter deservedly winning awards for best
actress and actor. Our production was well received by our audiences although several
older members felt that the subject matter was a little too close for comfort.
